My Best Friend Ruby

My heart is hurting as I've lost my best friend Ruby. She passed away at home today on her 10th birthday. I am blessed that God sent her to me when she was 8 weeks old to help me recover from heart surgery.

I became very tired on the day I brought Ruby home as this was the first time I had driven after my surgery. Somehow, I fell asleep on the floor after playing with my new puppy. When I awoke, Ruby was asleep right on top of my heart. As it turns out, she could hear the clicking of my mechanical heart valve and I'm sure it reminded her of her mother's heart beat. It was then that we immediately bonded. Ruby became my little shadow never letting me out of her sight.

It became my turn to take care of Ruby after she took such good care of me. Five years ago, Ruby was diagnosed with diabetes and it has required a shot of insulin twice a day. This past summer, she became blind as a result of cataracts. She had eye surgery with the cataracts removed, new lenses inserted, and she could see again! In December 2014, Ruby was diagnosed with liver disease. She has not been in any pain and has had a good quality of life.

I know that she is now in God's hands. Thank you "my little girl" for making my heart and life so much better. I'm going to miss you. God bless.
