Dog Recipes Made from Scratch

Our dog recipes are completely made from scratch using all natural ingredients. And they are so easy to do, there's no reason not to begin preparing homemade meals for your Mini Schnauzer. Homemade meals provide a healthy alternative to commercial dog food and there's no threat of pet food contamination. Remember the pet food recall of 2007?

But are they easy to make?
You bet! In fact, these meals are so simple, you can get the whole family involved. Your kids will have lots of fun baking up a batch of goodies for their special canine friend. After all, What dog doesn't love treats? It's basically canine candy.

Our homemade dog recipes were created with the Miniature Schnauzer in mind. And the added bonuses are many: they cost less than store bought treats, all of them are low in calories, and you know exactly what your Miniature Schnauzer is eating... a completely natural wholesome dog treat or meal!

Also, I usually substitute oatmeal and rice cereal instead of using flour, in my Miniature Schnauzer dog recipes. The cookies may not come out looking like cute bone shapes but they are healthier for your dog, and your Schnauzer doesn't care what they look like anyways.

RECIPE TIP:

If you want or need to use flour in your Miniature Schnauzer dog recipes - choose a healthy whole wheat flour, oat flour, or garbanzo bean flour!

And when adding apples, pumpkins, pears and other fruits or vegetables complimented by a spice, I like to add a teaspoon of cinnamon which helps regulate blood sugar (diabetes), improves circulation, and has anti-inflammatory qualities. Great for older Miniature Schnauzers who may be suffering with pain in their joints or arthritis.

In the end, you need to decide whatever you think is best for your Miniature Schnauzer given his health, exercise level, weight, and all other considerations. And please familiarize yourself with the foods harmful to dogs so you do not use any of them when preparing meals for your Schnauzer.

Fruity Pupsicle

• 1 ripe banana mashed well
• 1/2 cup of naturally sweetened apple juice
• 1 cup plain no-fat yogurt
• 1 TBSP honey (optional)
  

Mix all the ingredients very well and freeze in an ice cube tray.

Meaty Pupsicle

Baby foods come in lots of different flavors: chicken, lamb, liver, beef, apple, pumpkin, and lots more! All you have to do is choose a flavor your Schnauzer will love for these yummy dog biscuits. note: Always be sure to read the food label on baby food to ensure there are no other foods included that could be harmful to your pet, like onions. And buy organic baby food when possible.

PAW-some Biscuits

• 2 jars of baby food (2.5 oz jars) - you choose the flavors
• 2 cups all-purpose flour or oat flour
• 1 egg
• 1/2 cup water
• 2 teaspoon chopped parsley. Since parsley is a natural breath freshener, adding it to home cooked dog treats and meals is an added bonus!
• 2 Tablespoons Flaxseed (optional)
  

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Whip egg in a bowl and then stir in 2 jars of baby food and water. Then add the remaining ingredients; flour and parsley (and optional flaxseed) and mix thoroughly. Add a bit more or less water as needed for correct consistency. Once in dough formation, knead and roll out to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into shapes and add to a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes! Cool before serving.

Freeze weekly servings into small zip-lock snack bags. This way you can take out a bag at the beginning of each week and keep in your refrigerator so you will always have a nutritious treat ready to give to your Schnauzer.

Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Dog Chews

• 1 Cup quick oats
• 4 oz. of unsweetened natural apple sauce
• 1/4 cup dry milk
• 1 egg
• 1/4 tsp cinnamon

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine all the ingredients into a bowl and mix well for about 50 strokes. Lightly grease a cookie sheet with non-stick cooking spray. Drop mixture by the teaspoon to create little quarter sized drops. Bake for 15 minutes. Yields about 45 treats! Yummy!

BARK-fast
  • 2 slices of Turkey Bacon
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 TBSP water

Cook the 2 slices of turkey bacon in a non stick fry pan. Set aside to cool on paper towels.

In a bowl vigorously whisk together the eggs and water. If you like, you can use one whole egg and just the white of the other. Next, cut the turkey bacon into small pieces and add to the egg mixture. Pour the mixture into a non-stick fry pan and cook up an omelette.

Your schnauzer will go bonkers for this delicious breakfast!

dog Recipe tip: Instead of turkey bacon, change it up a bit by scrambling the eggs and then adding a tablespoon of non-fat cottage cheese to them. Scrumptious!

Mini Dog Dinners

• 4 frozen boneless, skinless chicken thighs
• 1 cup frozen green beans
• 1/2 head of cabbage
• 2 boil-n-bags brown rice
  (or 2 cups cooked rice)

Other variations of the above dog recipes can be made by using apples, naturally sweetened applesauce, sweet potatoes, turkey, tuna fish, the possibilities are endless.
