How to stop chewing carpet

My mini is chewing carpet and making holes help He's 7 months old and has ignored correction (bad dog) and I'm spraying the areas he torn with bitter apple but he moves on to another spot and does it again I even say bad boy, shame shame in a stern tone so far no luck. I don't believe in spanking but would a smack on the nose or behind maybe reinforce the no,no command ? I'm at my wits end and don't want to cage him or have to buy wood floors to stop this behavior its quickly becoming a serious problem hes also got a bit of a temper so correcting him starts back talk and jumping on you which is not going to be tolerated. I could use any suggestions to handle this problem as quickly as I can before I have no decent carpet left.

At 7 months he is still a pup and I would crate him. They consider a crate a safe place. Otherwise I would consult a dog trainer.
