Useful Dog Tips

Exercising a senior pet. Although you wouldn't want to over exercise an old dog, your senior pet still needs some form of physical exercise daily. Daily walks around your neighborhood and visits to the local dog park will keep their body moving and their senses stimulated.

Teach an old dog new tricks. Senior pets need mental stimulation. So challenge your senior pet by training your dog a new simple trick. It's good for their brain.

Protect Paw Pads. Ice melting chemicals as well as salt and sand, can cause dog pads to crack. Use dog booties and a moisturizer like Musher's Secret Paw Protector Wax can be real paw savers during the harsh winter months.

De-Skunk Solution. A good de-skunking solution is a mixture of 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of dawn liquid dish washing soap. Simply wash and Rinse your dog. Just be sure to avoid your dog's eyes. The solution should be used on your dog right away. Discard any remaining solution as it could explode if left in a container.

Socialize your dog. Provide lots of opportunities for your dog to interact with other pets and people. A well-socialized dog makes for a happy pet and owner.

Maintain a healthy weight. Overweight dogs suffer with more health problems. Discuss with your veterinarian the ideal weight for your dog and work on maintaining it.

Brush your dog's teeth daily. If you start at an early age, your dog will adapt to the process. Brushing your dog's teeth is the best thing you can do to keep his breath fresh and plaque and tartar at bay.
